Converting a bathroom’s tub into a walk-in shower is a popular new trend in bathroom remodeling. According to the American Institute of Architects, more than 60% of homeowners preferred a walk-in shower to a tub in 2013. And for most bathrooms, it’s a project that is pretty simple to execute. Here are a few things to consider if you’re looking at replacing your tub with a walk-in shower.
Bathroom Remodeling: Tubs for Showers
Where is your tub now?
If your tub is already located in an alcove in the bathroom, you can easily take it out and install a shower without much trouble. If you have a free standing tub, especially one located near a window, then you may have to move the location of the shower, which could mean extra plumbing costs.
Do you have the space?
If you have a tub in an alcove, you have the length needed for a shower, but you’ll have to check about the width. You’ll need at least 36 inches to be comfortable. This means you may have to move things such as the toilet, and keep in mind that you’ll need an additional 18 inches between the toilet and the shower wall, as well as room for the shower door to swing open.
Shower Floor Curbs
You’ll also have to consider whether or not you want a curbed shower floor. Curbs help contain water and are generally easier to install, as a curbless shower means you’ll have to raise the floor around the shower or lower the shower floor. However, a curbless shower makes walk-in showers easier to access for those with disabilities. If this is your goal, remember that you’ll need significant space in the bathroom to make this work.
